ABSTRACT

In the mid-90s, the general situation of the facades in Saint Mark square was in a serious state of decay, the result of a substantial lack of interventions for many years. In 1997 the general situation had reached the danger level when some initiatives of the Superintendency and the Municipality gave the starting signal for an extraordinary period of interventions. That was the start time of a great restoration site, perhaps the largest in the history of the restoration of the Square, who has interested Doges palace, Saint Marks church, the Patriarchal palace, the Tower clock, the New Procuratie, the Napoleonic wing, the Ancient Procuratie, the Marciana Library: in practice all buildings of the square, for a linear development of the facades of more than one kilometer: interventions funded by public and private money and by sponsorship.

The restoration works, in which were developed almost all the issues of conservation of outside stone surfaces, represent an unique chance for the research, involving the whole scientific community.

At the Conference we wont to provide a synthesis of the large restoration site of Saint Marcs square, focusing on the technical aspects, for the various issues handled, the outcomes of the studies and research, but also on some aspects of the cultural debate that a site of such importance highlighted.
