ABSTRACT

The conservation of the ruins in inaccessible and high sites turns out particularly complex for objective logistical conditions, for the state of neglect and for specific climatic  realities. Ruins of collapsed buildings, remains of towers and castles, stretches of boundary walls characterize the territory and the "sublime" peculiarity of the Landscape. The appreciation of such presences usually involves a "romantic" emotion and persuades to preserve them in the rules of archaeological restoration. Really, however, the intent to reinstate them into a virtuous circle of exploitation states the problem of their utilization, with choices both of substances conservation and of safety measures and accessibility. In times past, the restoration of these objects sometimes has taken away and emphasized types and conditions, putting on elements (battlements, environments) and only rarely limiting to fixing and protecting operations, but in the awareness of the perishable nature of these works. The matter is also to compare with the changes induced by their consistency and with the problems of their subsistence in the future. The essay proposes experiences and problems deal with the project of restoration and exploitation of the Sacra di San Michele Abbey and the Sant Ambrogio Castle, through some teaching experiences and some building sites in which it is possible check the results.
