ABSTRACT

This paper concerns the restoration of the Ghirlandina Tower, anticipated by a series of studies and based on the procedure that implies be fully aware of the situation, assess it, and make decision accordingly. The diagnostic project was developed on observations on site and on tests in laboratory and it had permitted to sort out the most appropriated techniques and the best products for the intervention on the surfaces. Certain basic choices were taken to identify the most suitable product for different operations, giving main priority to problems involving prevention, toxicity, and ecological aspects. Water-based products were privileged both for the cleaning stage and for the protection one.

During the executive stage of the restoration were performed analysis for testing the behaviour of the products and of the methods over the years. A large numbers of tests were made on areas accessible even after the disassembly of the scaffolding, to grant the repetition of examinations and to make the comparison with the data already acquired, starting point of the monitoring.

On the basis of these activities was scheduled the well-planned maintenance program, divided in two operational stages: the first one concerned the accessible areas affected by analytical controls, the other one was the remote supervision of the process. After the restoration only the maintenance will enable to keep well-run the system, prevent damages and grant the preservation of this important heritage.

KEY WORDS: preliminary controls, well-planned maintenance, prevention.
