ABSTRACT

This paper deals with the criticalities and opportunities which occur in conservation and management of archaeological sites as they are understood as complex systems where ruins, landscape and cultural framework merge into a whole, that means the identity of sites and their chance for a sustainable development. A systemic approach is needed to acknowledge and enhance the links between the objects, the vegetal environment and the territory.

Material conservation of archaeological findings should therefore be framed by a farsighted management strategy: knowledge, inspection, maintenance and monitoring are the tools to control and avoid risks and decay processes on one side, on the other side they can become a leverage for the enhancement and management of sites as understood in their own complexity.

Key-words: archaeological sites, maintenance, monitoring, planned conservation, management.
