ABSTRACT

This study examines the main issues of method in the conservation of wall paintings exhibited outdoors in two archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Through a critical rereading of the interventions of the past and an observation on the present conditions, the analysis is focused on the series of factors of deterioration that has put to risk the survival it on the time, and the efficaciousness of several adopted shapes of protection. From the made research it emerges that such measures carried out for all the still present mural paintings on the spot, not still carried in museum, were consisting essentially in the rebuilding of roofs, in the installation of mobile coverings, of curtains, wooden boxes and glass plates, in the application of consolidated and protective varnishes, in the curing with the dampness, in the elimination of the infestant vegetation and in the monitoring of the public.
