CONSERVARE LE FINITURE ALL’APERTO: GLI INTONACI ESTERNI DIPINTI A MANTOVA. PRIME CONSIDERAZIONI E PROPOSTE

ABSTRACT 

The purpose of the paper is to present some preliminary observations on the external painted plasters in Mantua, which represent the necessary instrument for a wider research on this topic. The conservation status of these material evidences demonstrates how serious is their risk of loss and how urgent it is a reflection on the problem of their preservation and, unavoidably, of their knowledge. The aim is to provide some tools for a more comprehensive development of the subject, through collaboration between the various actors involved in the process of preservation and enhancement of cultural heritage. For each group of plaster identified are reported the “buildings witnesses”, then are presented a brief description and the preliminary observations relating to the most significant degradation phenomena. Finally, waiting to be able to perfom a more exhaustive verification, some hypotheses are proposed about the possible relationships between production technology, environment and degradation mechanisms, in order to encourage the conservation of these finishes.
