Abstract
The Diagnostic Survey is a new tool for the monitoring of outdoor monuments. It has been found to be very useful when it is necessary to monitor the conservation status and degradation variations of outdoor frescos and bronze or marble statues.
The diagnostic survey consists of a series of layers on which a specific issue of the monument is reported. The issues are characterized by a restorer and a scientist that collect data together in a strong interdisciplinary work.
The restorer will collect information regarding defects of the surface, while the scientist will collect measurements and data.
At the end of the work the diagnostic survey is therefore composed of a multilayer representation of the conservation status of the surface of the monument.
As a case study the work on the "Santa Maria dei Battuti" façade in Conegliano Veneto in reported.
The full facade was inspected and mapped in all of its degradation processes from a restorer and a physicist. In this case it was useful to use a portable XRF systems and a ultrasonic instrument. The former for non invasive chemical analyses of pigments and pollution and the latter for the quantification of adhesive defects.
