ABSTRACT

The Masseria Crisci, located at Quarto in the surroundings of Naples, began in I-II century A. D. as a stock farm and stopover on the Consularis Puteolis Capuam, roman road axis connecting Pozzuoli to Capua. It retains, over the centuries, the rural function, and becomes the heart of a modern homestead.

The building surfaces, made of Neapolitan yellow tufa stone, a material that is porous and attachable from atmospheric agents, are very damaged. Since centuries, this material is devoid of plaster, and the underlying masonry, made of opus reticulatum, is now in sight.

This study aims at understanding the fundamental characteristics of the building in order to propose right conservation strategies. The attention has been focused especially on the surfaces degradation of tufa stones.

Stratifications, previous consolidations, transformations and additions are pointed out by the aid of a materic survey and a table analysis of the current situation of the architectural elements. This approach allows to highlight the different material substance of tufa stone and mortar used over the centuries. The analysis of degradation issues leads to develop the right approach to surfaces conservation.

Knowledge of rural Architecture characteristics allows to improve the current image of this construction type by the correct methodology.
