ABSTRACT

The subject of this paper is Palazzo Besta (Teglio), a Renaissance palace owned by the State and managed by the Soprintendenza per i Beni Architettonici e Paesaggistici, and its painted façades. The Palace has an internal courtyard which is surrounded by façades decorated with frescoes.

As a matter of fact the palace has been declared a site of interest in 1893, the first restoration started in 1912 and it continued until 1927. In the last decades the palace went through a series of conservation campaigns, producing an amount of diagnostic investigations, and lately a pilot project oriented to preventive and planned conservation has been carried out. The aim was to identify the critical issues and the tools for the conservation of these surfaces, so the first step was to gather all the information but also to execute a critical analysis of previous interventions.

The paper is focused on: preservation of the mural paintings, analysis of previous restorations, monitoring and evaluation both of the conditions and the effectiveness of interventions, designing the strategies for managing condition assessment as well as maintenance of the surfaces.

Simple and clearly defined protocols are needed to measure directly on the spot the condition dynamics as well as the efficacy of treatments and to schedule conservation activities on a longer time. This approach is also crucial to contemporary economic trends.

Key-words: Monitoring, prevention, long run vision.
