ABSTRACT

The restoration of the facades of the Ducal Palace, the New Prisons and the Bridge of Sighs on the Rio Canonica has been a very important moment of knowledge of architectural heritage. The restoration site, seen as a multidisciplinary experience, has enabled to gain valuable information on construction technology, materials employed, the conservation history of facades.

The chemical - physical investigations have provided a correct knowledge of materials and factors of degradation and in accordance with the examination of the historical evidences, have allowed the identification of previous interventions.

The state of preservation, influenced by the very particular climatic and urban context of the city of Venice, presented as a obvious critical points the effects of the presence of water and atmospheric pollutants.

These effects were clearly visible on the surfaces of the buildings but also affected the hidden structural elements, as the iron anchors of plates, with a high risk of chipping and falling of stone material on boats transiting the canal.

The purpose of the restoration was primarily the safety of the facades, and the inhibition of water access to the most delicate structures in an effort to prevent and reduce the progression of degradation. The methods used were chosen critically, considering the individual circumstances and limiting the use of incompatible materials.
