ABSTRACT

Science applied to Cultural Heritage has been presenting a new evolution in the last years.

It cannot and must not be restricted to a series of operations (even if refined and technologically advanced) which deal with the initial phase of knowledge and understanding of actual phenomena. It has to go further: the contribution of scientific experts is a valid support also in the steps after restoration, in particular in the evaluation of the efficiency of the treatments (testing) and in  monitoring the work of art over time- as reported in the Maintenance Plan.

For a correct “testing” of the operations- in particular when consolidation and safety operations are performed- it is a valid and essential tool to handle with a series of objective diagnostic data to evaluate the goodness of the treatments.

An example of this modus operandi is presented: the restoration of  the 'Loggia dei Viretti at the Sacra di San Michele near Turin.

Science and Cultural Heritage found in this case an adequate equilibrium on the time, the project choices and the adopted economic resources.
