ABSTRACT

Against a major industry, limited in Abruzzo is to a few episodes, and always corresponding to privileged

situations, in terms of resources and localization - as in the case of the sugar factory in Avezzano in Fucino,

or furnaces, and the asphalt and plaster factories in ValPescara, there is a small industry built along roads

and streams, the one that has built over the years a heritage of absolute importance from the point of view of

quantity, poor for materials and construction techniques, but effective and efficient for the intelligence that

has allowed and guaranteed the functionality and work until recently. The network of machines built along

rivers, streams, canals, consists primarily of mills, whose motive power was often used for additional pasta

industries, paper mills, copper factories and fulling. As an example, we can mention the mills of the “Valdi

Sangro”, in the provinceChieti, whose dense network had the role of social and economic structure of the

area concerned, at least until the mid-twentieth century. With the disappearance of the rural society that

produced them, the factories of the first industry in Abruzzo undergo a process of “becoming archaeology”

that only knowledge can bring back to attention. This contribution aims to increase that knowledge, starting

with a number of cases studied to try a comparison with the more general issues of conservation and

restoration of archaeological sites, and the possibility, in the case of mills of Abruzzo, to make a network

system of factories similar to a real '"artistic industry," with its consequences in terms of the values and

instancesofprotectionandenhancement.
