ABSTRACT Both academic experts (Manacorda, Ricci, Augie ...) and conservation organizations in recent years

came out with reflections on these topics. This paper starts from these talks and from the analysis of some real

examples,andarrivestothepropositionofsomethemesthatareveryimportantforeveryrestoration.

project that respects the signs that got consolidated within the matter. The most relevant issues are: 1)The conservation

issue. Often archaeological sites contain very sensitive structures and materials that should be kept indoor to avoid

decay, but they are not, they are exposed to weathering. Some internal rooms become public squares. Facilities that

remained hidden underground for centuries may become at risk after being uncovered and exposed to rain, sun and

wind; 2)The communication issue. When only fragments remain, how can we communicate the complex relations

between them and the whole lost large structure they were part of ? ”We should transform ruins in signs that can be

recognized.Inthiswaypublicopinionwillsustainheritageconservationandresearchdevelopment,thissupportwillbe

proportional to the number of visitors that are allowed to understand and appreciate an archaeological site”

(Manacorda 2011, 111). But at the same time, in my opinion, it is also necessary, to communicate the uncertainty that

may be in any historical reconstruction ... and this is a good thing, as Paolo Torsello said leave open the possibility to

put questions (Torsello 2006); 3) The exploitation issue. The archaeological area has one main purpose, to show itself,

and a rigorous planning is needed for this. Beside, different uses and exploitations can be realized, but it is important

with a reflection on how to "take care" of archaeological sites. Architectural restoration designers can learn from this
