Abstract

This paper discuss the Torcello 2012-2013 project, an archaeological pilot program sponsored by Veneto

Region Council and Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. The main project’s goal was to set up a collaboration between

archaeologists and archaeometrists during the excavation’s phases. In a training long project, it has been tested how to

implementa“firstaid”protocolinordertokeepthemaximumoftheinformationanddatacontainedineachexcavated

artefact.

TheexcavationhasconcernedapartofthesettledareaofthelateantiqueandearlymiddleagesoftheTorcello

island.TorcelloisoneofthekeysitesinordertostudytheproblemoftheoriginofVenice,sothequestionslinkedwith

the chemical and physical characterization of the finds is very important to answer sensitive historical issues. The

contents and the origins of the amphorae, the quality of the artisanal productions, the degrees of the reuse of ancient

roman materials: these are some of the fields where the two groups of scholars have tried to work together, sharing

experienceandknow-how.

Themainresultoftheexperimenthasbeenrepresentedbythestatementofthe importancetoworktogetherin

thewholeproject.Thepresenceofthearchaeometristintheexcavation,aswellthepresenceofthearchaeologistduring

the laboratorial activities, represents the only way to achieve the maximisation of the results in the conservations

procedures.
