ABSTRACT

As part of the excavation work for the construction of the new subway line in Naples and its underground

stations, the archaeological finds have offered the opportunity to transform those infrastructures into an

open-airmuseum,linkingarchaeologytoarchitecturaldesign.

We examine the two most important projects in this regard: the first is the project for Piazza Municipio,

designed by Portuguese architects Alvaro Siza and Edoardo Souto de Moura; the second, designed by

Massimiliano Fuksas for Piazza Nicola Amore. Both offer interesting topics regarding the relationship

betweenconservationandrestorationaspectsandnewarchitecture.
