ABSTRACT

The management of archaeological sites has a special meaning for those included in the UNESCO World

Heritage List, it is a fundamental element for them to remain in the list. As it is known, in fact, in 2002,

UNESCO has invited all the cities that have sites inscribed in the List to adopt a Management Plan, whose

aim should be to ensure over time the protection and preservation for future generations of heritage that have

motivatedtheinclusioninthelist.

With this contribution, through the analysis of some plans which were already drawn up for the Italian

archaeological sites, we will analyze the real potential and possible limitations of this tool for the

management, conservation andenhancement ofspecial cultural heritage suchasarchaeological sites.Starting

from the check of characters and contents of the plans, which should play a key role to identify appropriate

strategies to ensure a "sustainable" conservation of these sites, whose specific nature involves a complex

approach.
