ABSTRACT

Studies about its anastylosis in Italy are rather delayed, in the face of the important results obtained by

researches treated in Greece by highly qualified institutions like the YSMA (The Acropolis Restoration

Service)whichborewitnessofthethirty-yearsrestorationexperienceoftheAthens’Acropolis.

The delay is clear considering the condition of the Italian heritage: in the South of Italy and in Sicily,

problems about material deterioration menace the ancient monuments. The DICAR was interested in

testing anastylosis and its problems; Pi.Mar, a leader company in Puglia for the manufacturing of stone,

was partner in this test which aims to reproduce elaborate architectural elements thanks to Cad/Cam, a

computer-aided technology. The combined use of innovative systems, like the technique research on the

3D laser system and the CAM/CAD machine based on numerical control, allowed the optimization of the

processing steps. Methodological innovation brought to the production of a fragment of a Doric capital

belonging to the so-called late-Hellenistic Egnazia’s Foro. The replenishment of the lacking parts with the

same original material, the study of compatible fixing system, avoid the alteration of the ancient static

systemandguaranteethestructuralintegrityoftheelement.

The studies in progress, as we can see from the first results, aim at improving the machine tools’

technologies,inordertoadaptthemtothespecificpurposesofthearchaeologicalrestoration.
