ABSTRACT
The city of Aquileia is an interesting field of study for the complexity of the issues arising from the
stratification of archaeological remains in a urbanized site. This presents a double potentiality, in the
development of the contemporary city as in the discovery and enjoyment of the ancient metropolis. The
relationship between the archaeological sites and the town is however of mutual limitation if interpreted as a
contrast between the living and the dead city, an extraordinary opportunity for urban archeology if
interpreted as the integration between research, conservation and society. But this has required an effort for
the organization of the knowledge and the foreseeing of the objectives, through a research aimed at verifying
the consistency, the characteristics and the state of preservation of the public estates in Aquileia. For this,
different files have been elaborated with the actual and historical cartograpy, the description of the areas, the
archaeological sites and the buildings owned by the state. All these informations have been georeferenced
and included into a GIS, through which it is possible to make queries on cartographic, cadastral and archival
data, as well as create thematic maps which can provide the basis for following researches and also be an
useful tool for the planning of interventions for the overall arrangement of the archaeological park, with
