ABSTRACT

Theancientmonuments,themostconsiderablematerialevidenceof Velathri,havebeenthesubjectofspecialattention

in recent years, because the risk of their loss due the degradation. For this reason, all institutions State, Region, City

Council and the University involved to try to protect the cultural heritage of Volterra and enhance it by sustainable

developing of the territory. Through the examination of the framework on the international and national policy for the

protection and enhancement of cultural heritage the present contribute analyzes the policy for conservation and

enhancement of cultural heritage of Volterraand its territory. Protection and valorization works in recent years have

beenaimednotonlytooptimizethestructuresstabilityandtorestoredignitytothemonuments,butalsotopromotethe

accessibility, returning them to the urban and territorial landscape of which, for centuries, have been a constitutive and

distinctive element. It is believed that only a conservation work of an Heritage which also aims to enhance its

"sustainable"valorizationisabletotriggerthosevirtuousprocessesthatallowtoperpetrateovertimethebenefitsofthe

conservation activities. It’s necessary to promote the sustainable development of the city and its territory, finding the

lostconnectionsbetweenthearchaeologicalvaluesandenvironmentalvalues.Thenewfoundconnectionofthesevalues

would have enormous consequences «because a pluralism of values pertains to the heritage to protect and to manage

andrequireswaystouseopentoallthevaluesofanarea».
