ABSTRACT:

The geographical environment, i.e. the landscape that constitutes the scenario of monuments, always plays

an essential role in determining the quality of a cultural site. The monument might be an isolated building or

an urbanistic composition, but its scenario is always the botanical landscape, be it designed (parks, gardens,

alleys, etc.) or natural (mountains, beaches, hills, plans), cultivated ( crops, greens, vineyards, orchards, rice

fields, etc.) or spontaneous (plains, brushes, woods, forests, etc.). During the past centuries the choice of the

scenario has always been determined by the cultural fashion of the time (for instance eclecticism, exoticism,

exhibitionism or naturalism) while nowadays reigns the philological rigorousness (along which it is

forbidden to plant besides a monument plants which did not exist in that region when said monument was

created). But when the monuments itself is a tree of exceptional characteristics (dimension, age, rarity,

historical and cultural connections, etc.) its site might deserve the scientific attentions which are sufficient

and necessary conditions for touristic itineraries “in the green” which might allow direct emotional contacts
