ABSTRACT

The paper will present the contents and the preliminary results of an organic set of interventions designed to

preserve, to protect and to allow the public fruition of the archaeological area named “Fondi ex Cossar”.

The site represents a significant urban sector of the Roman city of Aquileia: it is made up of the remains of

differenthousingunitswhichbecamestratifiedfromtheIcenturyBCtotheVcenturyAC.

The conservation project represents the outcome of the International Architectural Competition announced

by Fondazione Aquileia in 2010, aimed at enhancing the archaeological site. The experimental approach of

the intervention is primarily due to its inter-disciplinary character, granted by the contributions of architects,

archaeologists,structuralengineersandstudiousbelongingtotheconservationfield.

The contents of the intervention concern three main goals: the in situ conservation of the archaeological

site’s elements (mosaics, fragments of masonry and archaeological pits); the realization of visitors’ access

devices; the design of protective structures, able both to protect the excavations and to facilitate the

understanding of the domus spaces in their current state, stratified over about 6 centuries. The roof’s

structural elements are characterized by a progressive scalability of the roof system which takes into account

both the progressions of excavation campaigns and the new outcomes that archaeological research will

produce.
