ABSTRACT

The monumental complex of villa Cattolica of Bagheria (Italy), is just a few kilometers from Palermo, is a remarkable example of suburban residence built in the seventeenth century and completed only in the first half of the eighteenth century. The villa, today, in planimetric composition, is characterized by a central architectonic element, marked by two exedras, set on a slight rise, surrounded by low buildings, forming a quadrangular enclosure lobed, containing, among other things, the church court, the dwellings of the servants and stable. Villa Cattolica, at the end of the XVIII century, after the sale by the family Bonanno e del Bosco, was used as a hospital and barracks of the Bourbon troops, finally, in the second half of the XIX century, it was acquired by the family of the local bourgeoisie, who meted out the central building as their home, and the bodies lower as factory for the production of food in the depots, and for the production of essences for perfumes.

Wishing to place on the main floor of the villa Cattolica permanent collection, gift of the painter Renato Guttuso and consists of works by the same master, but also of works by some of his friends, it was necessary to ensure the sustainability of the historic building by, for example, the safety, tolerability and verify the same rules for the preservation of the heritage of the building and its contents. Through the principle of minimum intervention has reached a high level of sustainability (in the meaning of ability to accommodate in the historic standards for safety an for the protection), of the intervention and has also achieved another goal, which is considered essential for the restoration of contemporary culture, namely the maximization of preservation of the authenticity layered of the monument- document, represented by villa Cattolica-Guttuso Museum. With the new use in the villa Cattolica is ensured constant maintenance and therefore the possibility of being passed down to the generations that follow us.
