ABSTRACT

In Venice, the interventions on underground services involve floor, paving and their maintenance, and represent a context in which the concept of "sustainability" has many facets of technical, economic and environmental kinds.

Considering the difficulty of finding new trachyte and the simultaneous need to dispose a part of the excavated soil after the intervention often in excess, a research to verify the possibility to use/recover the material has been developed with the aim of producing artificial lapis materials to be used in the maintenance of trachyte public pavement named “masegni”.

Exploiting the technology of stabilization and stabilization applied during reclamation and requalification of the dismissed industrial site of “Ex Conterie” (VE ) and the resulting surplus of inert material, it was tested the artisan production of blocks of trachyte.

The verification of the performance of the produced blocks, was performed by evaluating both the aesthetic appearance (compared to the original trachyte ) as the main physical-mechanical characteristics (compressive strength , wear resistance , slip resistance , etc.), in order to compare them with the original “masegni”.

Although the results not showing values as high as those of natural trachyte, they disclose that the characteristics of the artificial material are widely satisfactory for using in the paving of pedestrian area how Venice needs.
