Abstract

The Galleria Umberto I is not only one of the symbol of a great urban transformations period that concerned the city of Naples in the late nineteenth century, but it also is one of the first examples of the use of “new materials” - the iron and the glass - in that city.

The iron architecture was an expression of the nineteenth century culture where issues and values couldn’t be communicated through traditional stylistic devices. The architectonic language was the only means by which it was possible to transmit the resources of the new industrial and urban culture.

In the Galleria Umberto I, emblem of the expression of Neapolitan nineteenth century, it’s possible to find the right balance between ancient and modern forms, that succeeds in combining architectural and urbanistic dimensions.

The secular age, the inclement weather and the carelessness of man are still today causing damages to the iron architecture, that, by their nature, are already exposed to a high degradation risks.
