ABSTRACT

The covers of archeological sites and architectures in ruin, are the subject of several critical issues in relation to their different context, their materials and their constructive techniques.

This article, that will treat only covers made in metal alloys, will aim to analyze limits and potentials of this interventions, that connect architectural and archaeological landscape aspects.

The design of these structures is a cross-cutting issue that requires contributions from different disciplines. But it’s clear, from a methodological point of view, that therestaurationcriterias -authenticity, distinctness, reversibility, physicochemical compatibility, minimum intervention and topical expressive - are indisputable points.

Extrinsic and intrinsic factors of the architectural heritage have to deal with these criterias, that,in view of the several stakes, contribute to define this type of intervention as a complex process.

In order to define guidelines to support the design choices, case studies - where the main criterias of restoration project have been respected – will be analyzed, to underline risks that could happen if these criterias wouldn’t be adequately considered.
