ABSTRACT

The insertion of new stairs in existing buildings, with particular reference to masonry towers, appears a quite complex design topic. The re-functioning is strongly influenced by the peculiarity of the space, developed mainly in vertical direction. The theme of the paths assumes a primary role and characterizes the project that has to deal with functional requirements, regulations and aesthetic.

The use of steel, suitably adapted to the specific cases, offers to the designer the freedom of expression, mechanical strength, compatibility with existing structures and reversibility.

In the present paper some cases of recovery of masonry towers are commented, in which the stair assumes each time a different function, characterizing the vertical space at the same time.

The type of construction and the generous proportions of the Tower of the Castle of Trezzo allowed the creation of a COR-TEN steel stair inside, with large ramps and comfortable intermediate stops. In Torre del Borgo di Villa d'Adda, where a new library was expected, the new metal staircase becomes an architectural element that formally connects different levels. The designed geometry allows the viewer to read the integrity of the vertical space.

Furthermore, the new stairs provides also a structural function, since it guarantees the mutual connection between the four perimetral masonry walls, originally widely damaged.

In the case of Gorani Tower in Milan the new stair plays a decisive structural role, becoming the backbone of the tower. Along a convoluted vertical path, the stair is intertwined with five inclined steel tube, that support the stair and, using vertical cables parallel to the walls and coming down from the top, "take over" a portion of the self-weight of the masonry walls, removing a portion of the vertical loads.
