ABSTRACT

The restoration principles for masonry cultural heritage buildings are often not compatible with correct design and conservation requirements. In fact, the use of conventional metal materials, in most cases, showed excessively ineffective and problematic. This conflict has been unfortunately demonstrated by the relevant damage found in a large case of metal application, restored after several damages. On the bases of those simple statements, a different approach to the question has been pointed out, which consist in the use of “modern” materials and techniques that reduce damages avoiding the increase of structural resistance and improve the aesthetics of the project. After a short historical analysis of basilica of Aquileia, the paper show an innovative intervention technique in order to respect as better as possible the building original features is proposed. The hypotheses is implemented in the paper and show the main steps of the preliminary long standing work.
