ABSTRACT

The Mercado del Val in Valladolid in Spain is an exemplary study case to understand both the impact of iron architecture in the historic centers of European cities, since the mid-nineteenth century, and the present problems about restoration of that architectures.

The creative process of Mercado del Val reveals how the city of Valladolid reacted to the introduction of a new typology of architecture inside the ancient city center made in stone and masonry. Inspired to the most famous cases of iron construction existing in Europe the iron market of Valladolid was forged with materials coming mostly from not Spanish industries.

Through the broad involvement of the local press in the affairs of the market - evidenced by newspapers of the time - it was possible to measure the degree of awareness of public opinion, about the innovative scope of the introduction of iron in architecture of the city.

The proposed contribution, beyond to investigate the technical characteristics, the construction phases and the debate that characterized the construction of the Val Market, as one of the most significant example of iron market in Spain, also aims to highlight the current potential of the structure within the historic center of Valladolid, considering the controversial restoration project, playing in these days, that aims to reuse the market, retaining as high historical evidence, the characteristic nineteenth-century iron "wrap".
