ABSTRACT

Despite the increasing attention for the study and the analysis of methods and materials, up today there is still little information about facing. At first sight facing seems simple though it is ruled by complex mechanisms involving most of the painting stratigraphy and may cause damage or alterations. This study provides an overview of the evolution of facing techniques and materials, in the aim to define its field of application, risks and alternative application methods. A research protocol is proposed, along with research results of mechanical characterization of adhesive bonds on four different facing techniques.
