ABSTRACT

The contribution proposed here is the report of the operating choices applied to the conservation work in the southern wall frescoes of the Chapel of St. Eldrado in Novalesa, in Val di Susa (Piedmont), affected by a consistent and progressive degradation. The cycle of frescoes preserved there were successfully recovered in the eighties of the XX century, below an extended restoring performed in 1828. The study conducted on the causes and dynamics of degradation has highlighted the use of unsuitable materials in the makeover grouts of nineteenth-century and particular temperature and humidity conditions of the wall dictated by structural transformations that have occurred over the centuries, and more recently as a result of the removal of the single-lancet window’s infilling. The current restoration, after a full diagnostics and microclimatic campaign, has reinstated the plaster removed in the early years of 2000s, running it with a material compatible to the original one. At the same time the reflection on the building’s historical data led to the necessity of reproducing the nineteenth century paintings. The evaluation of the reintegration gap modes led to the choice to use an innovative material called TATTOOWALL. The photographic image of the removed nineteenth-century integration was transferred back on the infilling plaster of single lancet window.
