Abstract

As call for paper emphasizes, contrast between methods and conservation practice which floating between reassuring orthodoxy and heretical deviations from fixed codes, formed opposite ideologyes that, through time, had several results on education, and on cultural heritage conservation and restoration, and, finally on our profession. The contrast, but it would be more proper to define it, contradiction, is both in the use of modern products and in the choice of language codes floating between tradition and modernity especially in case of important operation of replacement at urban scale.

According to that observations, the paper means to submit a short consideration both on italian modern and contemporary architecture and on restauration, directed to rediscover cultural connections and practice that could make the discipline free from problems resulting from compliance with usual training to put it back, consistently, in the framework of contemporary town and landscape changes. The paper asks again if it is possible – starting from italian modern architecture masters revision and from the exam of recent teorethical developments to the matter – to show a new way of operating in the relationship between ancient and modernity, historic town and new architecture, conservation and innovation. And it asks to restore organic connections with architecture and town design at different scale too.
