ABSTRACT

The Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence is an Institute of the Ministry of Heritage and Culture and Tourism which operates in the field of restoration of cultural heritage since the late nineteenth century. Between 1967 and 1970, two workers of the Institute have been engaged in the restoration of the great Roman mosaic found in Constanta, the ancient Tomis. The file concerning the design, analysis and the proposed methodology for the restoration is part of archive of the Opificio. These documents, most of which are unpublished, are of particular interest for the history of the Opificio and, more broadly, for the history of the restoration of mosaics. In detail, the theoretical approach to the conservation of the mosaic is significant, as it strictly follows the general principles of the Italian restoration.
