ABSTRACT

In the current period of theoretical rethinking and developed experiments on the conservation and restoration, the issue of the lacunas treatment is a very interesting topic, because the issue involves an attribute, which coincides with the essence of the intervention object, regardless of the reference scale, from the individual evidence to the urban context. The aim of this study is to analyze the instance, on the basis of a case study, shifting the perspective towards treatment of the lacunas in urban areas, especially at the smaller abandoned towns. The paper illustrates an experiment carried out with a project aimed at checking the planning results in critical situations, such the reintegration of architectural and urban lacunas in the historical centers of the Abruzzo Mountains. In particular, it focuses to describe the situation of Rocca Calascio and the ability to revive a ‘ghost’ center, through projects that would transform the uses through the restoration and reintegration of housing units.
