ABSTRACT

The “Palazzo della Pilotta” in Parma, cultural centre of the city that today hosts several institutions of MiBACT (Italian Ministry of Heritage, Culture and Tourism), is a typical, extremely articulate, historical complex. In fact, it is the result of an historical and multi-layered evolution made of demolitions, reconstructions, renovations and expansions of existing buildings, especially in the second half of the sixteenth century. The real challenge at present is to ensure the maintenance of the whole complex that counts about 15,000 square meters of roofing, 18,000 square meters of exhibition space, and it’s 25 up to 35 meters high, in a context of a systematic reduction of ministerial resources for the restoration of cultural heritage. How to solve the numerous and substantial problems of a-so-huge complex, that extend from the fire and electrical systems update in monumental spaces, to the roof refurbishment, in absence of adequate surveys and with limited resources? From 2013, these are the themes that the local Office of Cultural Heritage had to deal with.
