ABSTRACT

The genesis of the complementary "orthodoxy" and "heresy" dates back from the beginning of Christianity. The incontestability of these concepts in the areas of religious and socio-political enviroment is undeniable because they are founded on defined dogmas over many years. They are not equally indisputable when one tries to apply them to the restoration. The current and heterogeneous theoretical result and the absence of codified rules do not allow us to define an orthodox or unorthodox intervention. The restoration of monuments, not being an exact science yet, forces us to trust on the principle of " on case by case basis", on the concepts of compatibility, reversibility, recognition and to the rule of the minimum intervention. Over the last thirty years there have been great advances in knowledge thanks to scientific research and the codification of methodological procedures of the restoration project. It was confirmed by the recent guidelines of MiBACT, where the building yard is intended as the last moment of knowledge able to actualize the executive project. Within the theoretical and methodological encoded result, by applying the correct design process, the project of Gambirasi palace was accomplished in Rome between 2007 and 2010. In respect of the two historical and aesthetics requests, intervention techniques were defined providing operational methodologies, compatible materials and innovative elements, hanging in the balance between orthodoxy and heresy.
