This work presents an archaeological intervention of excavation and restoration carried out by Soprintendenza all’Antichità dell’Etruria – now called Soprintendenza Archeologia Toscana – in Chiusi (Siena) between 1967 and 1969. During the construction of a building, a partially collapsed portion of the ancient town walls was discovered; andat the time, it was decided to carry out an anastylosis. During our research, we found a dossier in the historical archive of Soprintendenza that allowed us to shed light on many technical features of the intervention. The dossier, made by the officials of Soprintendenza, is full of hints, thanks to their meticulousness and care. The intervention is an example of the operating methods of Italian archaeologists in those days, and of their practical rather than theoretical approach. Presenting this work allows to make known an excavation that, despite its importance in the context of the Etruscan and Roman city urban system, had been forgotten.
Key-words: Anastylosis, Archaeological restoration, Chiusi, Via della Violella, Etruscan town-walls.
